Lovin' me some crab! Soup that is...51 Lincoln

51 Lincoln in Newton Highlands, MA is a pleasantly modest restaurant with a relaxing atmosphere. Never overwhelming, the bar and dining room saw a steady stream of diners on a Thursday night.

Chowder on Your Doorstep - East Coast Gourmet

I recently had the pleasure of opening a box which arrived on my doorstep to find, nestled inside it’s own mini Styrofoam cooler, several frozen pouches of chowder from East Coast Gourmet, complete with all natural oyster crackers baked in Vermont and a clam-shaped chocolate truffle as an adde

Lovin' Spoonfuls

If you haven't eaten at Ole Mexican Grill in Cambridge, MA, and you love unique and authentic Mexican cuisine, I highly recommend it.  It is a small, bright building tucked away on a side street in Inman Square.  The menu is inspired, and they offer Cambridge's largest selection of specialty tequilas as

Perfect Soup for Early Spring - Darwin's, Ltd., Cambridge

There's nothing like early spring in Boston, and on one of the first warm
days of the season, we were off to Darwin's for lunch! With two locations
in Harvard Square, one on Mt Auburn Street and the other on Cambridge
Street, this popular lunch stop has much to offer!

Serving up some excellent soups, Darwin's is a deli and cafe also
providing sandwiches, salads, take out or eat in, local bakery items,
coffee, tea, and, at the Mt. Auburn Street location, even wine and beer.
It's one stop shopping for gourmet goodness!

Recipe for Saag Panir (Curried Spinach Soup with Cheese)

Until now, I had only eaten Indian food a couple times.  Both times occurred in the ‘eighties at the only Indian restaurant in Albuquerque.  It had been close to a decade but I vividly remembered being fascinated by the restaurant’s tall brass water pitchers, the women adorned with bindis and wearing saris, the dark-skinned men hovering over the tandoor ovens in the kitchen, the ethnic music, and the general elegance the restaurant assumed.

I’m Pistou’d and I Can’t Take It Anymore

We’re into our second week of March here in DC; temperatures have creeped into the high 60’s the last few days and the only remnants of back-to-back blizzards are the few gray patches of snow on the south side of the street. But while the days may be getting longer and warmer, we’re still weeks away from spring asparagus, beets, rhubarb and the like.

Recipe for Brazilian Black Bean Soup - reenacted from the The Double Rainbow Days - Compliments of Chef Congdon

Always homemade, this was the first place where I saw a soup’s creation on a regular basis – Double Rainbow built their soups from fat up.  Here, I discovered that garnishing soup meant much more than crumbling saltines on top of clam chowder.  Sometimes the accent of a garnish was essential in creating the finished flavor the saucier had imagined. Sometimes the garnish was part of the recipe that was not meant to be cooked in the soup or cooked separately and added at the end.

The Continental - Legendary Greek Soup in Seattle

Few things remain the same on the Ave in Seattle’s University District. Sitting next to one of the largest universities on the west coast, the Ave has seen its fair share of change over the last few decades. One thing that has remained constant, though, is the Continental.

Free Soup for a Good Cause in Chicago

My friend Gemma (of Pro Bono Baker) just emailed me to let me know about a Soup event in Chicago - the Soup and Bread project at the Hideout. Every week, various cooks chip in pots of soup and some bread on the side, and it's free!

Elegance on Boylston - Vlora, Boston

A friend and I recently enjoyed a quiet evening at Vlora Restaurant on
Boylston Street in Boston. Not paying attention, I almost walked past the
stairway that leads to the entrance of this basement establishment, but
was impressed when I got there. The large wooden doors at the bottom of
the stairs provides a grand entrance, and the interior shines with
luxurious elegance.

Mouth-Watering Soup in Maine @ Johnny's Bistro and Bar

My husband and I enjoy both day and weekend trips to Maine and are always on the hunt for great new spots to enjoy a bite to eat. We were thrilled to discover Johnny’s Bistro and Bar on route 1 in Falmouth this past weekend. We didn’t know what we were looking for, but Johnny’s was it – elegant food in a casual and friendly atmosphere.

A Psychedelic Trip to the Oval Room

If I didn't know better, I would have gone on and on about the Oval Room's delicate medallions of shrimp sausage with citrus-dressed micro-greens in a bath of mushroom jus, because (unless I'm trippin') what's billed simply as "Wild Mushroom Soup" is anything but.

Trying to describe this soup to a friend was like a scene out of Willy Wonka:

Go Ask Alice, When She's Ten Feet Tall

One of many adventures Alice has in Wonderland is listening to the song "Turtle Soup" as performed by the sobbing Mock Turtle:

Beautiful Soup, so rich and green,
Waiting in a hot tureen!
Who for such dainties would not stoop?
Soup of the evening, beautiful Soup!
